Abstract
For the past 10 years, studies in Malaysia have shown an alarming data of illicit drug use among patients receiving Methadone Maintenance Treatment (MMT) in clinics and hospitals. This study's objective was to evaluate illicit drug use among 106 MMT patients in Setiu District in the year 2021, to determine its prevalence and associated factors. It was a cross-sectional study using a retrospective data extracted from methadone clinics records in Setiu from the 1st January 2021 to 31st December 2021. Data were analyzed using simple logistic regression. The prevalence of illicit drug use among patients receiving MMT was 39.6%. Positive HIV status (OR:2.22; CI: 1.01 - 4.91; p=0.049) was significantly associated with illicit drug use while on MMT programme. In summary, the prevalence of illicit drug use among MMT patients was high in Setiu District. This study may encourage healthcare professionals to improve the overall management of MMT programme in view of factors associated with illicit drug use whilst in the programme such as positive HIV status.
